What is a Tune Up?
Ask five different mechanics what a tune up consists of and you will likely get five different answers. The term tune up has been used since the beginning of automotive history and the term has evolved right along with the cars we drive. It originally referred to the actual tuning of the carburetor, the part of the vehicle which fed gas to the engine in older cars. Today's vehicles are fuel injected, meaning there's no carburetor to tune. Nowadays the term is much more general, referring to smaller services that are relatively easy to complete, yet make a profound difference in the way the car runs. The following are some of the services that may be completed by a technician during a tune up.
Air Filter Replacement
A clogged or dirty air filter will prevent the creation of the correct mixture of air and gas necessary to make the engine run right. Replacing an air filter is very simple in most vehicles and can take just a matter of minutes.
Fuel Filter Replacement
If your fuel filter becomes dirty or clogged it may lead to the contamination of the fuel system or prevent fuel from entering the combustion chamber in the correct amounts. This will result in a vehicle that runs very rough, continuously stalls or won't start at all!
New Spark Plugs
The spark plugs are what generate the tiny explosion that ignites the air and fuel mixture that allows the pistons to pump up and down. If they become dirty, corroded or miss-gapped they will begin to misfire, resulting in a huge waste of fuel and poor running vehicle.
It is important to take care of your vehicle's battery if you want to ensure that it will always start. During a tune up a technician may clean the terminals and the battery cable connectors as well as top off the battery's water.
Fuel Injection Cleaning
A fuel injection cleaning may become necessary after many years on the road to ensure they are still supplying the correct amounts of gas to the combustion chamber.
If you are experiencing a rough running vehicle or have noticed a decrease in your average fuel economy your vehicle may benefit from one or more tune up services.
