It's Time for New Shocks if this Happens
If you were to buy a new car off the lot today you would certainly feel a difference in ride comfort compared to a car that has been on the road for many years. The brand new suspension of the fresh vehicle ensures increased ride comfort but the suspension also enhances your ride safety. The suspension system, such as shocks and struts, is tasked with keeping all four wheel on the ground at all times, ensuring sufficient braking power as needed. It also prevents your vehicle from rolling over while going cornering, thanks to the anti-sway bar. For these reasons, and simply because you want to keep your ride comfortable, be sure to pay attention to the following symptoms of suspension trouble.
A common symptom of shock trouble is a car that bounces excessively. You can test your vehicle's suspension by completing a simple bounce test. To do so just push on the hood or rear of the car so it begins to bounce up and down. Once there is decent movement stop pushing and count how many bounces it takes for the vehicle to return to a stable position. If it is more than three or four bounces it could be time for suspension repair.
One Corner is Low
If it looks like one corner of your car is low but the tire is not flat in that corner it is likely being caused by failed suspension parts. As shocks age they will grow weak and collapse onto themselves. This issue results in your car being difficult to control as it will cause pulling and/or drifting and increase tire wear.
Oil on the Struts
Struts use a special liquid to help to absorb the bumps of the road. Old struts may crack or have their seals blown, resulting in the oily liquid leaking out, which can cause a stiff ride. If you're experiencing an uncomfortable ride grab a rag and reach through the wheel well to rub the struts. If there is any liquid on them it's probably time for new struts.
One of the scarier signs of suspension trouble is the feeling that your car is going to rollover while cornering. Part of your vehicle's suspension system is the anti-sway bar, tasked with shifting the vehicle's center of gravity while going around a corner. If this part were to fail you could end up on your roof.
