5 Common Reasons Your Car Won't Start
When you turn the key in the ignition you understandably expect the engine to quickly fire up. But sometimes, this just doesn't happen. What can cause the engine to sputter or not turn over at all? Your engine requires air, gas and an electrical spark in order to run, without one of these ingredients your car won't be going anywhere. Here are five common reasons a vehicle won't start.
The most common reasons a vehicle won't start is a dead battery. Because the battery provides the initial electricity needed to get the car running if it is dead there will be no power available to get the engine to crank. Dead batteries are often caused by human error, such as leaving a light on, but other things, such as a stuck relay, can drain them.
A bad ignition switch means there is not a good connection or electrical pathway being created to transfer electrical power from the battery to the coil to generate the spark needed to start the car.
When you turn the key the car's engine should start cranking. If you hear a single click, or a series of clicks it likely means your start motor has failed. This will require replacing the starter motor.
The alternator is connected to a belt that is spun by the turning of the motor in order to generate electric power, which is then fed to the battery to keep it charged. If your alternator dies the battery will soon lose power as well, and you'll also experience a number of strange electrical issues in the car.
There are a few problems that could occur within the fuel system that could cause starting issues. A clogged fuel filter or a broken fuel pump both will restrict the flow of gasoline, which is needed by the engine in order to run.
If you're having issues getting your car started be sure to have a certified mechanic diagnose the issue so it can be quickly repaired.
